Essential Elements of Data Mining

This post is a "soon to be" whitepaper.  Rather than procratinate until it is done, here is the list.  Each one will be a future post until it is done.  Then I will post it on the whitepaper section.

 Essential Elements of Data Mining

  1. A research goal
  2. A historically known dependent
  3. A flat file
  4. A computer
  5. Knowledge of the domain
  6. A lot of time
  7. Nothing to prove
  8. Proof that you are right
  9. The hope of surprise
  10. Something to gain

The idea is that without these elements you are doing something other than Data Mining.  Stats for instance. The bullet statements might be accused of being a little too clever (they might not refer to exactly what you think they do).  I will explain each it turn.
